Planning family photos can feel like one more thing on an already full plate, especially if you’re juggling kids, schedules, and everything in between. You’re already planning this big family vacation & now worrying about all of the logistics of family photos seems like just one more thing.
With a little bit of intention (and the right expectations), your family photos can feel relaxed, natural, and actually enjoyable.
As a Branson family photographer, here’s exactly how I recommend planning your session from start to finish.

Choose the Right Time of Day
Lighting plays a huge role in how your photos turn out, which is why I always recommend scheduling your session around either early morning or right before sunset when possible.
That soft, golden light is flattering, warm, and gives your photos that dreamy feel you’re probably drawn to. It also tends to be a more relaxed time of day for families once the busyness of the day either begins or winds down. Kids are their best selves in the mornings (usually parents are too after a cup of coffee haha) so I always recommend morning when you have tiny humans in the group.
I also always recommend if your littles are still on a nap schedule, for us to try and work around that! If we can’t make the morning work, then doing sessions in the afternoons after they wake up from naps is the second best option.
Pick a Location That Fits Your Family
Your location sets the tone for your entire session. Some families love a scenic overlook, while others want something simple and easy where kids can run freely. If you have older or more disabled members in the family we try to find something that is easily accessible for them.
If you’re still deciding, I break down my favorite spots in this guide:

I also provide an even more in depth guide to my families that book with me. It includes several options that are not listed in this guide!
The goal isn’t to pick the “most popular” place, it’s to choose something that feels natural for your family.

Coordinate Outfits (Don’t Match)
Outfits are usually the most stressful part for families, but they don’t have to be.
Instead of matching exactly, think in terms of coordinating colors and textures. Neutral tones, soft patterns, and a mix of fabrics photograph beautifully without feeling too busy.
A few tips that always work:
- Start with one outfit you love (usually mom’s) and build from there
- Stick to 2–3 main colors
- Avoid large logos or neon colors
- Add layers or texture for dimension
Most importantly, choose pieces you feel comfortable in—because that confidence shows up in your photos.

Plan Around Your Kids (Not Against Them)
If there’s one thing that will make or break how your session feels, it’s this.
Kids don’t need to be perfectly behaved to get beautiful photos. They just need space to be themselves. So oftens moms & dads will get frustrated because their 4 year old son doesn’t want to stand still, in the same spot for 20 minutes smiling. I can’t blame either party; the parents for being mad their kid won’t listen but also the kiddo for wanting to explore this cool new park. My biggest advice with kids is to just relax! It will all be okay & I promise you will like the pictures a lot more than the ones where you are tense and your husband is mad.
Try to:
- Avoid scheduling during nap time
- Bring a simple, non-messy snack if needed
- Let go of expectations for “perfect” smiles & be open to letting them just be kids.
Some of the best moments come from movement, play, and interaction—not everyone looking at the camera at the same time. This doesn’t mean that they wont come over and smile, I will always prioritize getting a few of the wall hangers, but I also let them be themselves and it usually makes them much more willing to come, stand and smile when asked!

Keep Expectations Simple
You don’t need your session to be perfectly styled or perfectly executed for it to be meaningful.
The goal isn’t perfection, it’s connection & memory. And when I say memory, I mean it. If you are stressed or tense during your family session, you will look back at those pictures and remember how you felt during that session forever. Don’t put that on yourself!
When you come into your session open to the experience instead of focused on outcomes, everything feels easier. And ironically, that’s when the most genuine moments happen.
Trust Your Photographer
You don’t have to know how to pose or what to do with your hands, that’s my job.
During your session, I’ll guide you in a way that feels natural and easy so you’re not left wondering what to do next. The more you lean into that process, the more relaxed your photos will feel. I will talk you through all of the posing, where to look and what to do with your hands. We will make sure your best angle is visible and always having your christmas card in mind.
I do this all the time & work with so many families every year, let me do my job and you just enjoy the moment!

TLDR FAQ
What should we wear for family photos?
Choose coordinating colors instead of matching outfits. Neutral tones and soft textures photograph best.
What time of day is best for family photos?
Sunset or morning is ideal for soft, flattering light, but timing can be adjusted for young children.
What if my kids don’t behave?
That’s completely normal. Some of the best photos come from candid, in-between moments.
How far in advance should we book?
I recommend booking at least a few weeks in advance, especially during busy seasons in Branson.
